The Smith Rock “Spring Thing” is organized and coordinated by the Smith Rock Group, a grass roots, all-volunteer, non-profit organization with 501(c)3 status, so all contributions are tax deductible. All the proceeds go to next year’s Spring Thing! Must volunteer to attend evening event. Then you can help support Smith Rock by SPENDING MONEY at our auction and raffle, with amazing items donated by companies like Metolius Climbing, Edelrid, Bend Rock Gym, Petzl, Camp and many others. We get a slideshow of some epic climbing somewhere. After projects conclude, volunteers are treated to our famous burrito dinner, dessert, and free beer. VOLUNTEER Each year about 300 people show up for the one-day event and we get a massive amount of work done! Parking passes, breakfast snacks, water, sunscreen, work gloves, direction, tools and supplies, and dinner are provided for all volunteers.
SPRINGY THING REGISTRATION
The event begins at 8am with registration at Smith Rock Park and concludes with the dinner, auction, and raffle starting around 4pm. The park is also popular with hikers, mountain bikers, birdwatchers, and nature lovers. The park is located in the high desert of Central Oregon and is a world-class rock climbing area. The Spring Thing takes place at Smith Rock State Park near Terrebonne, Oregon. A huge thanks goes out to everyone who helped over the years. Over the years we have conducted hundreds of projects throughout the park aimed at stabilizing and rebuilding high-traffic areas, reducing erosion, clearing invasive weeds, and other park needs. The Spring Thing is one of the best ways for people who love the park to give back and help ensure that the climbs and trails we love are here for future generations. This event is focused on Smith Rock projects developed by volunteers and park staff.Īs climbing and Smith Rock itself grow more popular, our impact on this beautiful natural area becomes increasingly pronounced. Many people and faces have changed over the years, but we have consistently kept the spirit of the event with a core group of people organizing the event, which now attracts over 200 people each year. They came up with the idea, started working with the park and rallied the volunteers for the first ever Spring Thing in May of 1993. The Smith Rock Group has been operating the Smith Rock Spring Thing Volunteer Day for more than 25 years, originating with just a few locals who wanted to clean up the park and fix the trails. We will also be giving out a variety of schwag and prizes at registration, including free Spring Thing t-shirts for all volunteers! In lieu of dinner, Climbers For Christ will provide a grab-and-go breakfast to all participants.
“Spring Thing” Volunteer Day RETURNS! Saturday, April 30th, 2022 After a two-year hiatus due to COVID, the Smith Rock Group is delighted to announce that the Spring Thing Volunteer Day is back on for 2022!Īnd not a moment too soon – two years without a concerted restoration and clean-up effort amid increased use is really showing in the park – retaining walls are crumbling, fences and stairs are showing wear, social trails are multiplying, and erosion is increasing across the park.
